Caribbean-style beaches
Not far from the island's capital Pigadia is the dream beach of Apella, which is probably the most famous on the whole of Karpathos and has already won several awards. The bay is surrounded by a dense pine forest and is virtually untouched. The particularly fine pebble beach and the shimmering sea water in various shades of blue make Apella beach one of the most beautiful bays in Greece.
The vacation resort of Amoopi, located in the south-east of Karpathos, is particularly suitable for families with children. The small bays with gently sloping waters also invite families with small children to enjoy a beach vacation. Equally popular is Diakoftis beach in the south of the island, which is almost reminiscent of the special dream beaches of the Caribbean with its turquoise blue water and white sand.
Along the east coast lies one of the most picturesque beaches on the island - Kyra Panagia Beach. Surrounded by massive rocks, it offers an idyllic atmosphere, which is further enhanced by the comparatively low number of beach visitors. The beach of Panagia is a place of tranquillity, where holidaymakers can stop for a bite to eat in the typical Greek tavernas overlooking the sea.
The best-known bays around the idyllic fishing village of Lefkos are Limáni Panagia and Frangolimiónas, where you can enjoy fantastic sunsets and linger a while.
Original villages
Karpathos' is also characterized by its picturesque and idyllic villages. Probably the most famous is the impressive village of Olympos, which lies in the north of the island and combines its beautiful scenery with traditional architecture.
The local inhabitants are proud of their customs, which they preserve with great effort and are very friendly towards visitors to the village.
The small, modern capital called "Pigadia" - its name comes from the many old wells in the region - was built around the natural harbor in a semicircle. This is the largest harbor on the southeastern coast. To the side of the harbor entrance are the ruins of an ancient fortress, which was built by locals in a semicircle around the natural harbor.
The ancient town of Paseidio used to be located at the foot of Kali Limni. The small town of Pigini is home to a variety of tavernas, cafés and bars, which are very popular with tourists and locals alike.
The old mountain village of Aperi, which used to be the capital of the island, stands out from other villages on Karpathos due to its splendor. It is beautifully situated at an altitude of 320 m surrounded by green mountains not far from the beautiful beaches of Panagia and Achata.

Surfer's paradise
The hilly Karpathos offers some of the strongest winds in Greece in the south around Afiartis and the airport. For windsurfers, there are basically three bays near Afiartis - Gun Bay with rather moderate conditions, Chicken Bay with rather shallow water and Devils Bay with the strongest winds.
Karpathos is a perfect destination for surfers and kitesurfers who are looking for a quiet place and want to experience authentic Greek culture. Especially between July and mid-September, the island offers optimal conditions for wind sports enthusiasts, making it a real highlight. Surf centers and schools are also available for hire.
